I was no sitting in a conference room with a cup of coffee waiting to be “debriefed” I’ve been waiting for two hours now, getting more and more pissed off as time goes by.
Eventually, the door opens, I spring to my feet, sending the cup crashing to the floor, in walks my mother. “Calm down Tommy.” She says before I can say anything and this just makes me angrier.
“Calm down? CALM DOWN?” I yell. “You are really going to tell me to calm down?”
She sits at the table across from me with the same look on her face that she used to give me when I was a kid, the look that says “if you don’t do what I say you won’t get anywhere.”
She just stares at me for a few moments before speaking again, “I’m sure you have a lot of questions.”
I stare at her in disbelief, “You could say that, yeah.”
I think for a few seconds “Well let’s start with the obvious one.”
“Why am I here?”
“Actually no, I was more thinking why you are not dead?” I say in a croaked voice, my eyes burning with tears “We buried you seven years ago.”
She lets out a sigh “We don’t have time for this. There are things in motio….”
“Make time!” I snarl at her, cutting her off. “You clearly want something from me, and you are getting nothing until you explain all of this.” I can feel my hand shaking with built up rage.
Without looking at me, she says “I had to leave to protect you, Tommy.”
“It’s true Tommy.” There is something like regret in her voice. “There is a lot you don’t know about our family. The world is bigger than you know, there are those of us that fight the darkness that is trying to engulf the world into mayhem and war. Our family has been at the forefront of this battle for millennia. I had hoped to spare you from this war that I’ve had to fight, I wished it had skipped you. It does that sometimes.”
“What are you on about?” I ask, my brain starting to hurt.
“When I was fourteen, my parents, your grandparents were killed.”
“I know, they died when their boat sank you told me,” I say
“No Tommy,” She says “I mean yes that is what I told you but that’s not how they died. They were killed by a Demon.”
I stare at her “You are… I mean…. What?”
She takes a deep breath before continuing. “For as far back as anyone can remember there have been those who stand against the darkness, there used to be hundreds they were called the Guardians, they had the ability to see what others can’t, they can do what needs to be done. They pushed back the forces of evil and kept the world spinning. It’s a thankless job, but they did it.
“Then a thousand years ago there was an upheaval in the underworld, the fractured factions banded together under the banner of one Demon called Crefurial, he killed all of the faction leaders, took control and has ruled them ever since.
“This sounds like a bad tv show,” I mutter under my breath
“Once Crefurial had them all under control, and in his army, he then hunted down and killed the only thing that could stand against him The Guardians. He slaughtered them, hunted them all down across the globe. They fought back and almost decimated his army, harnessing the powers granted to them by their lineage.
“it almost worked, they almost wiped out all of the Demons, they were once battle away from winning when they were betrayed. One of The Guardians top generals was corrupted and turned upon his brothers. He gave them access to the battle plans and safe houses.
“When the dust settles Crefurial declared that The Guardians had been wiped out. He was almost correct. One survived. He went on to live a long life on the run, never settling on one place for too long. But he did take a wife and had a son.”
I shake my head “This is all very well and good mum, but what exactly has this got to do with why you fake your death?”
“When Crefurial discovered that there was a guardian left in the world he vowed to hunt him down and end his line forever because there would always be someone there who could send him back to the underworld. So he hunted him down, and after a long bloody battle he killed him, but he never found his son. He went on to found the Lightbringers,” she waves her hands around the room “that is us. Before you ask again Tommy the reason, I faked my death was to protect you. I am a direct descendent of the Last Guardian, and so are you my son. I knew that if Crefurial found out I had had a child, he would stop at nothing to find and kill you. So I let him think that he had killed me, but it didn’t work. They figured out about you and are out to get you. I hoped the power would skip you, my father didn’t have the power but my Grandfather did and now, son, so do you.”
I sit there staring at her in silence for what seems like an eternity. I run through everything she has just told me, letting it permeate my brain.
I can’t help it, I start laughing. I can’t stop myself. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Eventually, I manage to calm down enough to stand up. “Yeah ok mum, sure,” I say. “I’m the last descendent of a long line of supernatural warriors, tasked to protect the world from Demons.”
“Bullshit.” I snarl “You abandoned dad and me, and now you’re coming up with some complete bullshit cover the fact you are a deadbeat bitch. Fuck you. I’m leaving.”
I turn to walk out the door, just as I reach for the handle she calls my name.
“Tommy, everything I have said it true and there is only one way to prove it to you.”
“You don’t get it, do you?” I say without looking back. “I don’t care.”
“Tommy!” she shouts.
I turn to look at her, and she hurls a knife directly at my face. I let out a scream close my eyes, throwing my hand out in front of me. I feel something flow through me, it might be urine running down my leg, I open my eyes, and the knife is hovering less than an inch from my face.
“See? I told you it was true.” She says
More to come…..
