The Last Battle

The night at the club had been a bust, Robin walked home feeling really dejected, her friends had all abandoned in favour of hooking up with random strangers.

She had been looking forward to a night of dancing and maybe a little flirtation with barman to get a few free drinks, but after an hour she had found herself standing alone in the corner of the club getting a headache from the pounding music as she watched her friends all hooking up.

“So much for a girls’ night out.” She hissed to herself as she walked home in the rain. Feeling herself getting soaked through to the skin she decided to cut through the old graveyard to get home faster. Usually, she wouldn’t take this way as she was always worried about getting lost in there, but tonight she just didn’t care, she would be able to get at least some shelter from the rain under the canopy of trees that line the paths between the graves.

The wind howled at her heels as she made her way through the all to quiet plots. Looking around she could see the shadows dancing behind her in, and she quickened her pace.

Robin, she heard a voice hiss from behind her. She looks around startled and shakes it off as her imagination. It had been a long week, and her mind must have been playing tricks on her.

Robin…. We know you are here and it is your time, you shall not escape us this night. The voice hissed again.

“Who’s there?” she demanded, “This isn’t funny.” She could feel her pulse quickening as she sped up even more “Whoever you are you can piss off, I’m not in the mood for this childish shit.”

A flash of lightning illuminates the grounds, and before her she sees a man standing there, dressed in a long dark trench coat holding a sword in his hand.

She stops dead in her tracks, “Wh-who are you?” she stammers.

The man in front of her does not answer. Instead, he takes a step forward, moving closer to her, as he raises his sword as if he is about to strike at her. There is another flash, and she sees his face clearly this time. He has long dark hair falling to just below the jawline, there is a scar running down his right cheek in the shape of a crescent moon, he has a look of determination on his face that hold no compassion on it.

But it is his eyes that most draw her attention, they have the cold look of steel in them.

She starts to back away slowly, but he says in a commanding voice “Stop!” and she freezes in her tracks, her feet are frozen in place, unable to move. The voice isn’t the same one that was hissing at her moments before.

She feels a presence approaching from behind her, she tries to run, but she is frozen as if some otherworldly power is holding her in place

YOU SHALL NOT TAKE HER FROM ME GUARDIAN. SHE IS MINE THIS NIGHT. A voice howls from behind her. Robin wrenches her head around to see a monstrous creature directly behind her.

Before she can react the man in front of her, in a calm voice says, “You cannot have her, Tritianix. She is not Fae, she is mortal. You have no claim over her now be gone from here before I end you.”

You delude yourself Guardian, Tritianix snarls. You have no standing to give me orders, and you cannot defeat me. You may be the Mortal Champion, but I have killed hundreds that have come before you. I killed your predecessor, and I will kill you if you if you do not stand aside.

Robin looks back and forth between them wondering what the hell they are talking about and just what she has walked into.

The Guardian shakes his head before fixing his piercing eyes on Robins and yells “Down.”

She instantly dropped to the side off of the path and falls into an open grave at the side, there is a clash as steel connects with steel. She manages to drag herself up in time to see the two fighting each other a fury of sword blows, the sound of metal on metal fills the air as the Guardian and Tritianix fight.

It goes so fast that Robin can’t keep up, Tritianix keeps slashing down at the Guardian who deftly parries every blow before hitting back with a counter strike the lightning flashes again, and through the rain Robin sees the Guardian take a lunging stab at Tritianix midsection and connects. His blade sinks into Tritianix up to the hilt, and it lets out a scream of pain and anguish, as the blade penetrates its flesh it erupts in a white flame, engulfing the creature.

Howling in agony the beast starts to shrink into itself, the Guardian pulls the blade, still sheathed in white flames, and turns to help Robin out of the grave.

“You are safe now, it’s gone.” He says offering her his hand.

She takes it and lets him pull her out of the grave, when she is steady on her feet again she asks “What was that thing? Who are you? What’s going on?”

“I am William, I am the Mortal Champion of Fae, and I was sent here tonight to protect y……” he cuts off abruptly as a flaming hand bursts through his chest, and he crumples to the ground.

A flame covered Tritianix lets out a harsh laugh You may have defeated me, but at least I have taken you with me. As it says this, Tritianix crumbles into dust.

Robin lets out a scream and rushes over to the fallen William. He lets out a bloody cough, “ouch, that hurt.”

“we need to get you to a hospital, now!” Robin screams

“It’s too late for that, ill be gone in few minutes” he starts coughing up more blood, “I have to tell you before it’s tool late.”

“Tell me what?” she asks, tears in her eyes.

“I was sent here to protect you because you are the” more coughing of blood, “you are the next Guardian. You need to find Titania she will guide and train you, you must seek the Queen of the Fae it’s your only chance.”

She stares at him in disbelief, and with the last of his strength, he thrusts the sword into her hands just before he bleeds out on the ground, gone forever.

Robin picks up the sword, and it starts to glow a brilliant white light. She feels the energy of it coursing through her hands, up her arms and into her chest, surrounding her heart.
