Things not to do

rant-warning
Number 1: When someone is having a bad day or a rant do not, I repeat, DO NOT, tell that person to “chill” all you are going to do by saying this is make them even angrier.

Number 2: When someone is talking to you and saying about something that they are struggling with do not tell them “it’s not that hard, I used to do it easily” again you will just make them angry.

Number 3: Do not ignore someone’s contributions, or the fact that they came up with the idea in the first place.

Number 4: Make sure that you remember commitments that you have made with someone and do not bail on them at the Last Minute.

Number 5: DO NOT TELL YOUR SON THAT HE ISN’T TAKING CARE OF HIS DAUGHTER AND ISN’T ABLE TO COPE WITH THE FACT SHE WAS UP ALL NIGHT CRYING, NEITHER OF THEM HAD HAD ANY SLEEP, DO NOT, DO FUCKING NOT, TELL HIM THAT THE REASON HE IS STRUGGLING WITH IT IS BECAUSE HE’S “A MAN AND IS NOT IN TUNE WITH HIS DAUGHTER BECAUSE HE ISN’T A WOMAN”

FUCK YOU, THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING MALE OR FEMALE. THE FACT THAT THE LITTLE ONE WAS UP ALL NIGHT CRYING AND THAT EVERYTIME SHE FELL ASLEEP IN MY ARMS AND I PUT HER IN BED SHE STARTED CRYING AGAIN BECAUSE SHE IS TEETHING AND HAS A COLD.
DON’T YOU FUCKING DARE TELL ME IT’S BECAUSE I AM A MAN THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
FUCK OFF

These are all things that have happened to me in the last 24 hours

You are pretty much spot on in my experience. People who haven’t been to the point of complete sleep deprivation and exhaustion just don’t have even the faintest clue how that utterly affects you … It’s just relentless and so draining that rationality and reality and ‘reasonability’ all blurrrrrrr in ways that can be really scary. Sleep deprivation has a similar effect on people as alcohol consumption, in terms of judgement and impairment, and yet often when I’ve been in this situation (usually for work or kids when they were young) you go on simply because you have no other viable option … even when it seems impossible …

      Thanks for saying that.
I have dealt with sleep deprivation for years, I dont sleep much anyway, but it’s harder when dealing with the little one as well i just hope I don’t get to the punchy stage, as I call it, that’s never good

So sorry Colin. I hope you get to have some sleep soon. It’s about an individual person, not the male/female factor that they respond to. They know who cares for them and loves them. They also know when they’re misserable and like to share. Hang in there. You got this!

I’m sorry to read this Colin… You are an amazingly caring dad doing a great job. The Little One just can’t say why she’s crying. So no matter if you are a man or a woman, there is no way to find the magic way to calm her. Heck, even when she knows how to express herself, she probably won’t be able to say clearly why she’s sad (I should know, I’m a girl LOL) Hang on 🙂 You are a good daddy, and you will sleep again…. Some day 😉 xx

Thanks Cyranny, it was torture that night and the thing that made me angry about that comment was that it was my mum that said it.
Thankfully she slept most of the night last night only woke up because she kicked off all the covers and wanted her dummy. But I almost got a full night’s sleep

Glad to read this 🙂 I never went through this but I helped friends who had sleepless twins for months, and I didn’t count the hours spent rocking them… And I could always decide to go back home and sleep comfortably in my silent apartment 😉
